Release date

I'm virtually certain that the soundtrack was released in the United States on August 8, 1980. I have lots of personal reasons to believe that this is true, but additionally, I know a lot more about media strategy than I did when the album first came out. I'm pretty sure the sequence of events was:

May 1980 - the following were released simultaneously as 7" singles in the United States on MCA Records:
- I'm Alive (Electric Light Orchestra song) - this single was sold in a blue paper jacket that didn't have a hole in the middle.
- Magic (Olivia Newton-John song) - this single was sold in a pink (mauve?) paper jacket that didn't have a hole in the middle.
August 8, 1980 - simultaneous release of the film ("Xanadu (film)") and the full 12" soundtrack on sturdy vinyl designed for 33 1/3 rpm turntables by MCA Records (unlike the cheapo vinyl that United Records issued the initial pressing of Out of the Blue on)

I don't have my sources yet, and I haven't even read the "Xanadu (soundtrack)" article in a while, so it could be that the article has been corrected the last time I saw it. It also could be that the UK release was early (I vaguely remember that bit of trivia), but I remember a lot about the U.S. release. -- RobLa (talk) 09:52, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

MusicBrainz has more specific dates on some releases. For Magic, they list May 1980 as you state. I'm not sure if they can confirm everything. --JoelSherrill (talk) 17:18, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
