Well it did happen, but I could not confirm that it happened on this date. --mav 23:27, 3 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Iran

[edit]

It looks to me like the Iranian hostage crisis is listed as starting on each of the first four days of November. I was about 13 months old, so I don't know offhand which is right. The 'pedia article on the incident itself says the 4th. --Calieber 17:37, Nov 4, 2003 (UTC)

Eh? November 1 states that Khomeini instigated the thing by calling for protests on the 4th. November 4 states that militants took over the embassy on that day. Iran hostage crisis agrees with those two and November 2 and November 3 don't mention or link to the hostage crisis event. Are there sources outside of Wikipedia that disagree with this (I have seen some references to a November 3 start date for the hostage crisis, but the Nov 4 date is quoted more often - probably because it was already Nov 4 in Iran but still Nov 3 in much of the US). --mav
Well, it's settled then. I don't know how to read. --Calieber 21:19, Nov 4, 2003 (UTC)

2008 US Election

[edit]

The entry for the election of Barack Obama should read as follows:

The event is only notable because he was the first African-American elected President. To remove reference to this fact removes the notabiity of the event. Including this fact is not racist, it is the reason that it is notable. Also, please do not add his middle name to the listing, he is not popularly known by his middle name and adding it adds nothing to the listing. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 14:00, 5 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hussein Obama is not « African-American » ; he is not yet elected ; he won 338 votes ; his full name is B. H. O. (II). You don't like « Husseyn » ? That's your problem, not mine. --Budelberger (talk) 14:19, 5 November 2008 (UTC) ().[reply]

I guess we should address things one at a time. Are you saying that he is not African-American? -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 14:23, 5 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Budelberger, I'm surprised that you characterise mentioning the fact of President-elect Obama's ethnicity as racist when you are pedantically inserting his middle name - and from time to time omitting his first name - where this is not appropriate. It is not customary in English (or French, for that matter) to refer to people by their full given names in ordinary writing or speech. Would you care to repeat - in English - the points you made in French on your talk page in full, please? Thanks. AlexTiefling (talk) 14:54, 5 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is Mister II (i. e. Barack Husseyn Obama the 2nd) president of the Ztats-Unis ? What is in USA the January 20 Day ?… --Budelberger (talk) 16:07, 5 November 2008 (UTC) (). (en.wikipedia racists don't like even « 04 » in « November 04 » ; see « Category:November » !)[reply]
I think we can agree that Budelberger is pushing a POV here (what, exactly, isn't clear), but he's already exceeded 3RR, and the next revert of his will result in a report to the appropriate notice board. Deor (talk) 15:58, 5 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
YOU and « Mufka » are pushing your POV here ! Is II American, or not ? is II elected, or not (2009/01/20) ? Is November 4 « November 04 », or not ? You & « Mufka » will be blocked, because of your POV vandalism. --Budelberger (talk) 16:07, 5 November 2008 (UTC) ().[reply]
Who is « Deor » ? An amateur of vandalism ; see here. --Budelberger (talk) 16:09, 5 November 2008 (UTC) ().[reply]

Technically, it may be that Obama is not the president-elect until the Electoral College casts its votes in December (he certainly will be before the inauguration on January 20, though). I propose the wording "U.S. voters choose Barack Obama to be the first African-American president of the United States of America". (And I simply didn't notice that my undoing of the entry's rewording also undid a good change in the categorization. I've fixed that.) Deor (talk) 16:18, 5 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I see no reason to split hairs on the topic. For all practical and historical purposes, he was elected on November 4. The world will address him as president-elect from November 4 forward. I think that the current version is concise and informative and doesn't need to be changed. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 17:56, 5 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Black or African-American?

[edit]

I had a thought about the Obama entry that I felt might be important to bring up. This event is notable because Obama was the first black American to become president. Should the listing say black or African-American. Going forward, it won't be notable if a black Haitian-American becomes president - the color precedent has already been set. The important distinction in this case is color not geographic origin. Is there some MOS guideline that lays out how this should be handled? I understand that there is a difference between African-American, Italian-American, French-American, etc (continental origin vs. national). But would African-American and Haitian-American be compared similarly to Italian-American and French-American? If that's the case, then the distinction is black and white. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 20:31, 7 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That information wasn't unhelpful, look it up on Google and see it was right. Every single time I add perfectly legitimate information to Wikipedia it gets taken down due to the person's ignorance.

It doesn't matter what you found on Google. In order for an observance to be listed on a day of the year article, it must be supported by a linked Wikipedia article. It also must meet the requirements set forth by WP:DAYS and WP:DOY. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 18:29, 3 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Erroneous section

[edit]

The section which states Barack Obama was elected on this date in 2008 is erroneous; he in fact assumed office as the 44th President of the United States on January 20, 2009. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.24.50.109 (talk) 20:19, 4 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

2003 torture at Abu Ghraib

Hello, i added the entry about torture- i believe a stain on the honor of the United States is notable, and can only be ameliorated by acknowledgement, remorse and atonement.Rich (talk) 07:36, 8 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Anniversaries - birthdays

It appears Laura Bush has been listed as the 45th first lady of the United States. She was, in fact, number 43. Check your list on the topic. 80.130.44.250 (talk) 13:07, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

According to this source, she is the 45th. Kiwipete (talk) 01:50, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
