Use of sources
[edit]I've reverted a complex addition which seemed to me to be misusing its sources, and saying very little that was new to the article while making many unnecessary citations. E.g. "Tolkien was known to have been familiar with Plato's myth": but Wood, the source cited for those words, says "Tolkien no doubt knew...", i.e. it's a reasonable guess! – Wood did not say (and did not mean) that Tolkien knew the myth. I wrote a bit more in Tolkien and the classical world on the possible connections, few of them rising to the level of proof. We could add a bit of that here if people want, but we certainly have "the main points" already. Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:14, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
