Deletions on municipality articles
[edit]Hi Joost, please explain the strange deletions from municipality articles, like external links and railway info.--Patrick 17:17, 25 December 2005 (UTC)
- Generally, the only external links that are deleted are those to the official municipality websites, which are now part of the infobox (with extra additions, e.g. population density, mayor, etc). In a few cases, external links were removed because they had little relevance. The railway info was only deleted on the Bloemendaal article, and that is because, in my opinion, the way it is presented is rather unclear and hardly related to Bloemendaal (actually, the railway that is most relevant to Bloemendaal, the one from Haarlem to Beverwijk, is not included, whereas the ones from Haarlem to Zandvoort and Leiden are. It is a good idea to include railway information on municipality pages, but the current presentation is so lousy that it is more likely to confuse people than to enlighten them. Joost 17:27, 25 December 2005 (UTC)
- Since two of the three railway lines are there, it would be nice if some editor added the third. With regard to lay-out: they could be put in a box.--Patrick 17:43, 25 December 2005 (UTC)
- You also removed http://www.sdu.nl/staatscourant/gem/gem64nh.htm --Patrick 17:49, 25 December 2005 (UTC)
- As for the Staatscourant link: I actually added the Staatscourant site as a reference (since it was used as a source for information about the municipal council, the mayor, and up to date population statistics). I probably indeed should have used a direct page to the page about Bloemendaal. As for the railway information: actually I have quite strong objections against the general mode of representation, which is not . An (in my eyes) good mode of representation, would be for example a subsection 'Railway connections' containing the text:
- 'The municipality of Bloemendaal contains three train stations: Bloemendaal, on the connection from Haarlem to Uitgeest; Overveen, on the connection from Haarlem to Zandvoort aan Zee; and Heemstede-Aerdenhout, on the connection from Haarlem to Leiden.'
- My text gives all stations on the line, so it gives more information.--Patrick 01:07, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
- The fact that the railway information appears below a navigation bar (which should IMO be below the complete article)
- What do you mean, the province template? The railway templates play a similar role, therefore I put them also at the end.--Patrick 01:29, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
- , as well as the fact that it contains information that is unlikely to be of interest to the average person (e.g. station abbreviations), are my main objections to the current mode of presentation. I agree that it's good to incorporate this information in the article, but for that I'd say the information really has to be incorporated into the article itself, rather than be added below the actual article and the navigation bar. One thing which I aimed towards with my edits of municipality pages, is to avoid redundancy, add extra and more accurate information (population density, mayors, information about municipality councils) and at the same time provide a consistent mode of presentation. So, when a good and clear way of presenting train stations has been found, it would be best to apply on all the municipality articles. Joost 18:32, 25 December 2005 (UTC)
- The templates are automatically consistent for the whole line. If you like you can change the layout.--Patrick 01:21, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
Images on Commons
[edit]Hi Joost,
Good work, making images available on the English Wikipedia by reuploading. But why not on Commons? Then other projects can use them also.
Patrick 14:45, 21 January 2006 (UTC)
- Good point. I will start putting on the images on Commons soon (with slight modifications, reflecting some municipality reforms, e.g. the combination of Drechterland and Venhuizen was reflected in the image for Drechterland, but not in the images for the other municipalities). Hilversum Changes
[edit]I'm not aware I made the changes you said I had. I only changed the order of two sections in the article. Thus, I guess that two things could have happened: I either made a mistake by making the change starting from an older version, or, there was a hick-up in the system (which can happen sometimes) in which I could not see the latest changes and therefore started working with the older version. So, well, actually you did not revert my changes but re-apply your own changes. The change I made is still in the article :) mr-t 18:08, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
Almost forgot: please, try to only commit one change at a time and use show preview, because otherwise we get an unmanageable page history... and mistakes like the one above are more likely to happen...

Groet, NielsFTalk to me.. 01:04, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Seeking advice on map graphics
[edit]Joost, hello from the other side of the pond. I've been doing a lot of work on New York City related articles. Many are in need of improved organization. My goal is to introduce a Template infobox for each of the five boroughs modeled after your very impressive Template:Infobox Dutch municipality. The most important element is the geographic information communicated in your wonderful maps. Your arrangement is fantastic with the inset in the upper left corner showing a zoomed out view, and the main view neatly shaded.
Would you be willing to make a similar map for the NYC project? Only five are necessary, one for The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and Manhattan.
If not, could you kindly offer suggestions on how to make such beautiful maps such as the ones in your Dutch municipality series? Thanks so much! Wv235 04:11, 3 August 2006 (UTC) PS: I'm working on this with Quasipalm. See his talk page User talk:Quasipalm#NYC_Borough_template
Another editor has added the {{prod}}
template to the article Pod People (band), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}}
template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. BJBot (talk) 06:59, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
AfD nomination of Pod People (band)
[edit]An editor has nominated Pod People (band), an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").
Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pod People (band) and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).
You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 10:59, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Sylhetī Nāgarī, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://medlibrary.org/medwiki/Sylheti_Nagari. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences.
This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 13:04, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
Cut & paste move of Modi script
[edit]Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you recently copied the contents of a page and pasted it into another with a different name. This is what we call a "cut and paste move", and it is very undesirable because it splits the article's history, which is needed for attribution and is helpful in many other ways. The mechanism we use for renaming an article is to move it to a new name which both preserves the page's history and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. In most cases, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. If there is an article that you cannot move yourself by this process, follow the instructions at Wikipedia:Requested moves to request the move by another. Also, if there are any other articles that you copied and pasted, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. Thank you. Eastern Nagari script
[edit]Are you following some rule in redirecting the Eastern Nagari script page? Or are you acting on your own accord? We have been working on this page for a while, and don't think such actions are warranted without a discussion or a warning. Chaipau (talk) 16:27, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Semitic Scripts --> Indic Scripts Dispute
[edit]"Minority view" or not, this is an encyclopedia and, in general, where there are disputes in the acedemic world, all competing theories with valid sources should be documented. In this case in particular, there are serious scholars who disagree with the theory (and that's all it is, a "theory"; it has not been proven) that Indic scripts were adapted from Semetic ones. By not mentioning it on "each and every page", but instead presenting as fact that these scripts stem from proto-Canaanite, we would be misrepresenting the current situation in acedemia. I agree that it should not be noted as disputed on just these three pages, it should be noted on all pages if we are to include the disuted information at all. However, the solution is not to remove mention of the dispute on these pages, but to include it on those that don't already mention it.--William Thweatt Talk | Contribs 17:58, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
Eastern Nagari
[edit]Ah, okay. I'm no expert in the history of written scripts, so I'll take your word for it! Thanks for messaging me about it. --SameerKhan (talk) 21:51, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
- I am, however, as close as one can get to being an "expert" on the phonologies of the Eastern Indic languages, in particular the two major languages that use the Eastern Nagari script (Bengali and Assamese), and I am also familiar with all the transliteration/transcription schemes used to represent those languages in Roman script. Trying to redirect "Eastern Nagari script" to "Eastern Nāgarī script" makes no sense here, as the languages that use the script to not make the phonological distinctions that justify those diacritics. If we wanted to stick to Eastern Nagari-style transliterations, we should say Eastern Nagôri/Nagôrī/Nagori, but that's really going too far as it is. I vote to keep the name of the article as Eastern Nagari script. --SameerKhan (talk) 22:00, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
- Sounds good. The same goes for Sylheti Nagari (as Sylheti is another language of similar phonological structure), so I've reverted that as well. --SameerKhan (talk) 22:15, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Saurashtra script sidebar
[edit]Hi-
In the sidebar for the Saurashtra script page(I believe it was your edit), you indicate that Saurashtra script is derived from Tamil script. I'm wondering if this is based on claims in the literature on the script. It seems an unlikely claim to me, since the majority of the letters are, as far as I can see, clearly based on an early variety of informal Nagari script that eventually evolved into modern Gujarati script. The shape correspondences are quite systematic for the main bodies of the early informal Nagari and even modern Gujarati letterforms, and the main area of apparent unsystematic differences is in the way the Nagari right hand stem has been treated in the Saurashtra letters.
I'm not aware of any easily available literature on Saurashtra script that the claim of a Tamil origin might be traced to. If there is no such basis for the claim, it would be better to remove it from the sidebar. My own observations come from my research on a variety of scripts derived from early Devanagari, including Gujarati, Mahajani-Baniauti-Sarrafi, Kaithi, Sylheti Nagari and Modi in North India, and several scripts of the Malay archipelago. Saurashtra clearly falls in with the North Indian branch, with a few idiosyncratic changes in form probably due to its being written on palm leaf. I'm operating on the assumption that given the peripheral nature of this script, there is probably next to no literature on it, if any, and that my observations and analysis when published will be the first such treatment available.

Your account will be renamed
[edit]Hello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Joost. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Joost~enwiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name. If you think you might own all of the accounts with this name and this message is in error, please visit Special:MergeAccount to check and attach all of your accounts to prevent them from being renamed.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
