- 1853 – The Lake Erie, Wabash and St. Louis Railroad, a predecessor of the Wabash Railroad, is incorporated in Indiana.
- 1914 – Passenger trains of the Canadian Northern Ontario Railway begin using the Grand Trunk Railway's Union Station (pictured) in Toronto.
- 1921 – The Railways Act 1921 receives royal assent in the United Kingdom, merging the country's 120 railway companies into 4 (The Big Four): Great Western Railway, London, Midland and Scottish Railway, London and North Eastern Railway and Southern Railway.
- 2004 – John Francis Nash, Vice President of Operations for the New York Central and president of Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad and Lehigh Valley Railroad, dies (b. 1908).
