List of North American Numbering Plan area codes
The North American Numbering Plan (NANP) divides the territories of its members into geographic numbering plan areas (NPAs). Each NPA is identified by one or more numbering plan area codes (NPA codes, or area codes), consisting of three digits that are prefixed to each local telephone number having seven digits. A numbering plan area with multiple area codes is called an overlay. Area codes are also assigned for non-geographic purposes. The rules for numbering NPAs do not permit the digits 0 and 1 in the leading position.[1] Area codes with two identical trailing digits are easily recognizable codes (ERC). NPAs with 9 in the second position are reserved for future format expansion.
Area codes in numerical order
[edit]Area codes that are not in use are listed in italic type face; and unassignable codes are bolded. The column Date lists either the date or year of assignment before implementation, or the in-service date.

- ^ The year may designate either the time of assignment or the in-service date. In-service dates are often difficult to ascertain for the early codes before they gained public recognition with gradual implementation of Direct Distance Dialing in the 1950 and 1960s. Starting with the late 1980s, assignment and in-service data was published timely in Planning Letters by the NANPA, fully accessible on their website.

- ^ Notes on Distance Dialing. American Telephone and Telegraph Company. September 1956. p. II-3. The publication states that by 9/1956 109 codes had been assigned.
- ^ Notes on Distance Dialing. American Telephone and Telegraph Company. 1968. p. II-3.; by May 1967, all five TWX codes were reported as in service. 128 NPAs were in use, and NPA 950 was reserved. But uncertainty exists about the year between 1963 and 1967 in which these codes were actually installed.
