- 1832 – A cable snaps on an incline of the Granite Railway (pictured) causing one of the first rail transport related fatalities in the United States.
- 1911 – Canadian Northern Railway (CNOR) purchases the right-of-way and assets of the defunct Carillon and Grenville Railway, the last broad gauge railroad, at 5 ft 6 in (1,676 mm) in North America, to become part of CNOR's Montreal-Ottawa mainline.
- 1953 – The New York City Subway begins using tokens for passenger fares.
- 1987 – Indian Railways installs its first solid state interlocking at Srirangam, India.
