Chemainus is a town on the east coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
Founded as a logging town in 1858, the town is now famous for its 34 outdoor murals. This outdoor gallery has given birth to 300 businesses, including a theatre, antiques dealers, and eateries. The tourist industry stemming from the murals saved the town after its mill closed in the early 1980s.
The name "Chemainus" comes from the native shaman and prophet "Tsa-meeun-is" (Broken Chest). Legend says that the man survived a massive wound in his chest to become a powerful chief. His people took his name to identify their community.

Chemainus, British Columbia → Chemainus – Canadian disambiguation practices call for unique town names to be without disambiguation; Chemainus already redirects here. A hatnote for Chemainus (disambiguation) will address the old name of the Stz'uminus First Nation/Stz'uminus people who now style themselves that way (to distinguish from the town name, which is only an adaptation and not their pronunciation). - Support per longstanding practice documented at at WP:CANCITY, as a note Skookum1, I would use a hat note linking to the FN rather than a DAB page (if there is only one topic to distinguish against).--kelapstick(bainuu) 12:05, 12 March 2014 (UTC)
- Per that:
- Chemainus River
- Chemainus River Provincial Park
- Chemainus Secondary School
- Chemainus railway station
- there may be others in future eg something like Chemainus Forest District if that exists, that's just here as a theoretical example.Skookum1 (talk) 14:42, 12 March 2014 (UTC)
- creating Chemainus (disambiguation) now.Skookum1 (talk) 03:06, 20 March 2014 (UTC)
- Per that:
- Support as I see the settlement being the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC for the title "Chemainus". —seav (talk) 17:56, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

re the cited demonym
[edit]Interesting..... re this and https://www.noslangues-ourlanguages.gc.ca/bien-well/fra-eng/vocabulaire-vocabulary/demonyms-eng.html its citation]. I've never heard it, though admittedly have never lived in that particular area of BC. Where the feds got it from I'm curious, but as it's cited it can remain; it does sound like a "joke name" and recently-spawned. I'll consult the local newspaper to see what they think about this and what they use.Skookum1 (talk) 05:55, 28 March 2014 (UTC)
