[edit]Not sure how to phrase it but it is probably worth including the interesting fact that the constituency of Dublin South does not share its boundary with the council area of South Dublin and in fact lies mostly (completely?) outside it. jlang 13:50, 12 May 2005 (UTC)
Are the full count details (i.e. not just first preferences) available for any of the elections described? I'm particularly interested in 1937 Dublin South. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Signor Eclectic (talk • contribs) 17:22, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

I propose splitting this page to distinguish the 1921 to 1948 city constituency from the 1981 to 2016 County Dublin/South Dublin&DLR constituency. While constituencies change all the time, these were quite distinct, and combining them in the same page could lead to confusion as to who represented areas historically. These maps show the area of the older constituency. I would call the page of the earlier constituency Dublin City South (Dáil constituency). It would be clearer then that the Dublin City South constituency is the predecessor constituency of Dublin South-Central and Dublin South-West (itself in its earlier form). I would not propose altering the visible text or blue links on incoming pages, but that Dublin South would link to a different page from Constance Markievicz than from Alan Shatter. Such changes from other pages can be made through a careful use of the WP:AWB.
It was occasionally described as such in the Dáil record, see e.g. DUBLIN CITY (SOUTH) VACANCY—(ISSUE OF NEW WRIT) in 1924. The constituency is then described in the text of the motion as "the Borough Constituency of Dublin South", which goes to why it is simply named as Dublin South in the legislation. The Electoral Act 1923 lists it as Dublin South under Part I on the Borough Constituencies (the division between borough and county constituencies was dropped from 1969). The word city was also included in the definition in the Government of Ireland Act.
This proposal is in conjunction with a parallel proposal on Talk:Dublin North (Dáil constituency). Iveagh Gardens (talk) 10:09, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
