I remember in the mid 1990s that Island Gardens had an above ground station with the tracks terminating at two platforms that were linked to the ground by a spiral staircase around an elevator, all built in the original DLR design and colours. For the extension however the line now runs underground so it can penetrate the Thames, with a new station in the tunnels. I haven't been surface side since the extension was built - does anything of the original station still exist? Timrollpickering 00:05, 25 Apr 2004 (UTC)

"It was elevated with two platforms, each capable of accommodating a single car train. The station required significant rebuilding to allow the platforms to take two-car trains."

I have video that I shot of this station (in fact the whole line) when it first opened. It clearly shows 2 car trains running into the elevated platforms of Island Gardens station. I even recall a two cat train over-running the buffers and hanging over the end of the station during the pre-opening shake down. I don't believe this re-build ever occured and that the station could accommodate 2 car trains from the start. Every other station was built for 2 car trains.

I believe each platform originally could accommodate 1 car due to the Y Shape of the station, with the main platform later rebuilt for two. tring to find a source for this (I know there is one - I used it for a school project on the DLR) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.149.182.210 (talk) 00:39, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
